In 1939 Eleanor Roosevelt resigned from The Daughters of the American Revolution,
because they refused to let the magnificent
contralto singer, Mariam Anderson, sing at
Constitution Hall in Washington, DC, be-
cause of her skin color. Mrs. Roosevelt
made arrangements for Ms Anderson to
sing on the steps of Lincoln Memorial.
Over 75,000 people came to hear her
sing on Easter Sunday morning.
