THE AMERICA'S STIR-FRY STORY
America's Stir-Fry, a multicultural books and gifts company, was started January 22, 1993, a direct result of two main catalysts. First, I saw the documentary "The Buffalo Soldiers".
My feelings ran the full gamut of emotion, from pride to sadness to anger, as the realization hit me that I had never heard of these great men, nor of their contributions to our country.
Tears filled my eyes and I wept. I felt great sorrow, because I should have learned about
these men in history class, along with the rest of American history. The Rodney King incident was the second catalyst. It was then that I prayed, "Lord, what is my contribution to be?" It became acutely apparent to me that children must reach adulthood with an intact positive self-esteem and self-image. Each child must be able to see pictures in the library books that look like themselves, so they can feel good about themselves. It is imperative that they learn about the numerous contributions that people from their unique cultures have made to our country.
If there is to be any healing in "race relations" in our nation, there has to be enlightenment
through knowledge about the diverse cultures and ethnic groups that comprise the United States of America. Children must learn about them in the classroom as well as in the home. While it is important to learn of one's own culture, it is equally important to become informed about other cultures, thereby gaining respect and appreciation for one another. In a stirfry, each of the ingredients maintains its integrity, yet each contributes to the delicious finished dish. Our Creator enjoys variety. How boring the world would be without it.
